An Information Event on Muş's Historical and Cultural Heritage Held at the TBMYO
An Informational Event on Muş's Historical and Cultural Heritage Held at the TBMYO
At an event held at our university's Technical Sciences Vocational School (TBMYO), educator, author, researcher, and painter Turhan Sur gave a comprehensive presentation on Muş's historical structure, cultural heritage, and its significance from past to present.
The program, held in TBMYO's 210th classroom, was attended by TBMYO Director Dr. Fatih Şevgin, while the event was coordinated by Handicrafts Department Head Lecturer Mikail Sevindik.
In his presentation, Turhan Sur touched on the origin of the name Muş, explaining the city's identity throughout history, along with the traces left by various civilizations. He emphasized that Muş has been a meeting point for diverse cultures throughout history and has become a symbol of unity and solidarity from past to present. Sur stated that the destruction of historical artifacts, particularly in the city center, due to indiscriminate interventions has negatively impacted Muş's tourism, cultural heritage, and scientific research.
Sur stated that the artifacts smuggled from Muş have seriously complicated the process of understanding the region's history. He claimed that the region contains more than 1,225 royal tombs, tumuli, and mounds, making Muş one of Turkey's most important archaeological centers. He also touched upon the West's destruction of historical artifacts, stating that the Seljuk-era dragon-head bracelet found in Muş, currently on display in the Erzurum Museum, is a striking example of the displacement of cultural heritage.
In his presentation, Turhan Sur also touched on the unique architectural features of Muş houses.
Sur noted that traditional Muş houses are mostly two-story, and that the helmet-domed design seen on the windows is a characteristic element of the region's architecture. He emphasized that these building details possess both aesthetic and functional qualities appropriate to the living conditions of the period, and are among the important architectural elements that reflect Muş's cultural identity.
At the end of the event, Turhan Sur emphasized that a society's knowledge of its own history is indispensable for preserving its cultural identity. He stated that societies that do not understand their history struggle to preserve their cultural heritage and cannot build their future on solid foundations. Sur stated that history is not only a field of knowledge that reminds a nation of the past, but also a compass that determines identity, belonging, and direction. He stated that preserving Muş's thousands of years of heritage is not only an archaeological duty but also a great responsibility in terms of strengthening cultural ties between generations.
TBMYO Director Dr. Lecturer Following the event, Dr. Fatih Şevgin, in a brief assessment, said, "I would like to thank Professor Turhan Sur for his valuable information and contributions. We believe that such activities are of great importance in developing our students' historical awareness and preserving our cultural heritage. I would like to thank all the academic and administrative staff who participated."
The event increased the participants' awareness of the preservation of Muş's historical fabric and cultural heritage, and concluded with Dr. Fatih Şevgin presenting a certificate of appreciation to the guest who made the presentation.
