Art Resisting Time: Classical Binding and Restoration Workshop Held at Technical Sciences Vocational School
An important event was held within our university's Technical Sciences Vocational School (TBMYO) for the preservation of manuscripts. The workshop, organized by Mustafa Sulu, Presidential Archives Restorer and Marmara University Classical Binding Expert/Researcher, who came to our university for the conference titled "Rare Works Defeated by Time", brought together students from the Department of Handicrafts and Design with cultural heritage.
In the event, coordinated by our university's Islamic Arts Community academic advisor Lecturer Selahattin Aslan, the restoration of manuscripts was explained and classical binding techniques were introduced in practice. Detailed information about the classical binding process was provided to the participants throughout the event. Many applications, from the preparation of book forms to thread stitching techniques, from cardboard cover production to the details to be considered during the binding stage, were demonstrated by Mustafa Sulu himself. Comprehensive information was also shared on the protection of manuscripts, the preservation of cultural heritage and the importance of the art of classical binding.
Restorer Sulu emphasized that the art of classical binding is not only a technique, but also a cultural value transferred from the past to the future. “Classical binding means keeping a historical and aesthetic heritage alive, beyond physically preserving a work. Every work done in this field carries not only a book but also the traces of a civilization into the future.”
The students who participated in the workshop expressed their great satisfaction with the event. The students, who stated that they had the opportunity to see classical techniques closely, especially thanks to the practical demonstrations, expressed that their interest in traditional arts has increased and that they wish for more events to be held in this field, and expressed their gratitude to our university administration.
