‘HALKAR’ Workshops in Traditional Turkish Handicrafts

Technical Sciences Vocational School Handicrafts Department Young Artists Workshop on ‘HALKAR’ in Traditional Turkish Handicrafts

As part of the Career Days events organized by Muş Şehit Yücel Kurtoğlu Fine Arts High School (GSL), a Traditional Turkish Handicrafts “Halkar” study was carried out by our university Technical Sciences Vocational School (TBMYO) Handicrafts Department academic staff member Instructor Mikail SEVİNDİK. The event was organized with the participation of senior high school students.

In the event held in the Şehit Yücel Kurtoğlu Fine Arts High School painting workshop, under the guidance of Muş Alparslan University Technical Sciences Vocational School Handicrafts Department academic staff member Mikail Sevindik and Şehit Yücel Kurtoğlu Fine Arts High School Traditional Turkish Arts teacher Nesrin Polat, the halkâr technique, a type of illumination art, was introduced to fine arts high school students in practice. Instructor A halkar study, a type of illumination, was performed by Mikail Sevindik with different sizes of halkar patterns prepared in advance. First, the halkar patterns were transferred to sketch papers. The patterns transferred to the sketch were transferred to the shehler paper to be applied. The zencerek study of the pattern, the rulers of which were drawn, was performed. The event ended with a charcoal drawing of the pattern. Filiz Karademir and Suzan Yaldız, students of the Handicrafts Department, also accompanied the two-hour event.

Handicrafts Department Instructor Mikail Sevindik provided information about the art of illumination, which constitutes a branch of book arts in Traditional Turkish Handicrafts. He said that the art of illumination comes from the Arabic word zehep (gold) and means gilding, decorating with gold. As a term, Tezhip; ‘It is the art of painting the titles and pages of religious and literary manuscripts and the surroundings of calligraphy panels, hilya-i sherifs, decrees, warrants, tughras, albums, miniature works and bindings with various motifs and patterns in a composition and especially decorating them with gold.’ Mikail Sevindik, who made the explanation, also talked about the materials used in illumination and the motifs used in illumination. Sevindik, who talked about the types of illumination, said that Halkar is also a type of illumination. Halkar is the shading with watery gold and drawing the record with dark gold. This training, which was carried out under the guidance of Mikail Sevindik, was quite productive within the scope of our career day events. We would like to thank the management of Şehit Yücel Kurtoğlu Fine Arts High School and the management of our university for their valuable contributions. I believe that such external stakeholder collaborations will inspire our students, increase interest in our traditional arts and transfer them to future generations in this way. I believe that such events create awareness.

Şehit Yücel Kurtoğlu Fine Arts High School Traditional Turkish Arts teacher Nesrin Polat said, “I teach traditional Turkish arts such as illumination, tile and miniature in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades at our school. Today, in the workshop event we organized under the coordination of Muş Alparslan University, we showed our students how to create the halkâr motif. First, we taught how to take symmetry and then we transferred the motifs to şöhler papers with tracing papers.”
